Erik shares a love for enjoying the beautiful Traverse City outdoors that started when he began coming up as a teenager. Now he enjoys it with his four children and wife Lisa, as well as their German shepherd, Scout. He is motivated and passionate about living a well-rounded life, working hard, playing hard, participating in his faith, and serving the local community in different ways.
A family-centered upbringing was the center of Erik's youth, and his exposure to the wealth management services industry began with his father, Jack Gruber, who started his own practice with Sagemark Consulting in 1975. Erik's dad instilled in him important lessons about the responsibilities of being a business owner, the head of a family and a leader in his faith.
Erik and his wife Lisa both grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. They kick-started their marriage by signing up for the Peace Corps, where they served two years in the Dominican Republic. With their eyes set on continuing a lifestyle of adventure surrounded by natural beauty, they moved to their favorite vacation spot—Traverse City—in 2004 and quickly began to establish roots.
While positioning himself to be a financial services practice owner and learning as much about the area as he could, Erik discovered that northern Michigan was full of small- to medium-sized businesses that needed help with just the type of services that Sagemark Consulting provides. With the help of his father, Erik started his Sagemark Consulting practice in Traverse City on July 1, 2006.
Erik whole-heartedly believes in and embraces the integrity of the client-centric business model of Sagemark Consulting. He finds one of the most appealing aspects to be that clients pay a fee for services instead of having to buy financial products, which is a predominant practice in the rest of the industry. Since 2006, Erik has worked closely with 150 business owner families and their existing advisors. Erik and his team evaluate each case on a cross-disciplinary basis (covering business-owner, estate, financial and tax reduction strategies) to make sure that nothing gets missed.
Erik continues his association with his broker/dealer Lincoln Financial Advisors. Lincoln Financial Advisors is a member of Lincoln Financial Group, a 100-year-old diversified financial services organization. This has allowed for a pooling of vast intellectual resources and many years of comprehensive financial planning experience to benefit clients and their families.
Erik is a firm believer that the joys and beauty of life should be enjoyed today and not put off until tomorrow. When not serving his clients, he may be seen on a snowboard on the slopes with his son Jack, swimming at the beach with his twin daughters Ellie and Lucy, enjoying an early morning breakfast with his son, Max, or hiking a Leelanau County trail with his dog Scout. He is an active member at St. Francis Catholic Church and serves as a board member at Michael's Place, a local non-profit that offers grief support for children and families.
